October 31 Doctrine Divides, Mission Unites

He who gives to the poor will lack nothing, but he who closes his eyes to them receives many curses. ~Proverbs 28:27   The righteous care about justice for the poor, but the wicked have no such concern. ~Proverbs 29:7  Be careful not to do your, “acts of righteousness,” before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in Heaven. So, when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. ~Matthew 6:1-4  Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. ~James 1:27  This is how we know wh

October 30 Confession Is Good for The Soul

He who conceals his sin does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces finds mercy. ~Proverbs 28:13 Blessed is he whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man whose sins the Lord does not count against him and in whose spirit is no deceit. When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer. Then, I acknowledged my sin to You and did not cover my iniquity. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord”—and You forgave the guilt of my sin. ~Psalm 32:1-5 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. ~1 John 1:9 Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise. Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in

October 29 Reflections

As water reflects a face, so a man’s heart reflects a man. ~Proverbs 27:19 Do not merely listen to the Word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the Word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it—he will be blessed in what he does. ~James 1:22-25 Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man, “unclean.” For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. These are what make a man “Unclean,” but eating with unwashed hands does not make him “unclean.” ~Matthew 15:17-20 What if the only way that you had a clue ab

October 28: Filings

As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another. ~Proverbs 27:17 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful. And Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the day approaching. ~Hebrews 10:23-25 Okay, tell the truth now. Are you better behaved in public or at home? Do you perform better when you are alone or when someone is watching? Do you do better when you know that there will be an evaluation or when you don’t think anyone will even notice? Is there a difference in your performance or behavior when you are paid or volunteering? If we are honest, probably most of us would have to admit that we do perform better when others are watching than when we think no one will see. It’s pretty common. Recovery groups have, as part of the program, accountability partners and sponsors because

October 27 Save the Glaze for the Bunny

Like a coating of glaze over earthenware are fervent lips of an evil heart. A malicious man disguises himself with his lips. But in his heart, he harbors deceit. Though his speech is charming, do not believe him, for seven abominations fill his heart. His malice may be concealed by deception, but his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly. If a man digs a pit, he will fall into it. If a man rolls a stone, it will roll back on him. ~Proverbs 26:23-28 For there are many rebellious people, mere talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision group. They must be silenced, because they are ruining whole households by teaching things they ought not teach—and that for the sake of dishonest gain. Even one of their own prophets has said, “Cretans are always liars, evil brutes, lazy gluttons.” This testimony is true. Therefore, rebuke them sharply, so that they will be sound in the faith and will pay no attention to Jewish myths or to the commands of those who reject the truth. T
