Family Photo Album

Scripture: Hebrews 2:10-11 Listen Link: www.lcepc.org then look for “sermons” tab. For Mother’s Day, I thought it might be nice to look through a family photo album of mothers in the Bible. I almost picked them at random, but I was generally looking for mom’s that we could relate to. Our Scripture reading for today was chosen to reflect on Jesus’ acceptance of us as his brothers and sisters. Not because we are as perfect as He is. But because he loves us so much anyway. So, the mom’s we’re looking at in Scripture today are really not supermom’s, just people, whose stories got into the Bible for one reason or another. Not supermoms because I’ve been warned many times not to preach on the Proverbs 31 woman and expect all the ladies to live up to that ideal. After all, that description was written by a guy describing his idea of the perfect woman, so how realistic could it be? That’s a joke. I am not mocking the Bible. Yes, it is good that the ideal is recorded in Scripture. Bu

Get Closer to Jesus

Scripture: John 21:14-20 Listen Link: www.lcepc.org then look for “sermons” tab. How do you follow Jesus? How do you love Jesus? Obey his commands. Very good. What is a summary of his commands? Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength and love your neighbor as yourself. You know that one, good. What other more specific behaviors are required of us in order to obey that very general command? What does obeying those commands look like in your life? And since that’s what following Jesus will look like, is it evident? Do other people know that you are following Jesus? How easy is it for them to find out? Here are some more specific ways to love God and neighbor: Pray. Fast. Abide in Christ. Cling to the vine. Go and make disciples, baptize them and teach them to obey. I did a brief study of this and found that there are 38 distinct commandments in the New Testament given by Jesus. I’ve printed them out for your perusal, But, if we are saved by faith, wh

Neighboring

Luke 10:25-37 Listen link: www.lcepc.org then look for “sermons” tab. Back in 1983, Pastor Paul Brown is quoted in the Waterfront Newspaper. That’s the newspaper before the Missaukee Sentinel. In the filing cabinet in the supply office I found this article about the groundbreaking ceremony for this building. Listen to what he said then, “This building is not the focal point of this church, but a place from which to go out into the world…a base to do his work.” I was very pleased to find that I am in full agreement with Pastor Paul Brown’s stated values about ministry in Lake City. If the building is not the focal point of the church. Then the people must be the real focal point. He is saying the church is the people not the building. This building is just home base for all your ministry. He also said, later in the article, “Let’s get this church built to get on with the job.” That means that he saw the building as just the beginning of a long future of ministry together, a
