Love Versus Knowledge

1 Cor. 8:1-6 Paul is talking about food sacrificed to idols. Nothing we have to worry about right? But hold on a sec. In the Liberal media someone has published an interesting little article: “51 Things Evangelicals Have To Give Up To Be Compliant Biblically,” by Deborah on June 5, 2013. It’s poking fun at Christians for trying to live according to the Bible.1 It begins this way. “If you’re a follower of former evangelical pastor and conservative activist David Barton, you can kiss any fun in your life good-bye. Heck, you can kiss most things that support your lifestyle good-bye. On May 19th, Barton gave a sermon at Whitesburg Baptist Church in Huntsville, Alabama in which he fingered Starbucks as a corporation that supports marriage equality. He said: “Starbucks is pouring all this money into destroying traditional marriage. The question is, can a Christian give money to a group he knows will use it to attack what God supports. If you know that, when you buy a cup of Star

Be Wise

1 Cor. 6:1-11 Interesting that Paul’s illustration of his point this week is about Christians dragging their brothers and sisters through lawsuits in unchristian worldly courts. Last week I mentioned all the silly warning labels. You do know don’t you that all those silly warning labels exist because of people suing each other for every little thing, right? Since now I have mentioned the warning labels again, I will just toss in here one additional thought that occurred to me about that. I had said last week, those silly warning labels mean that there are people out there who need to be told those things because they don’t have enough sense to know better without being told? Can you understand that God looks at people who don’t listen to his warnings about sin in the same way that we look at people who don’t have common sense about simpler things? But there is one significant difference. We think of those silly people and laugh at them as they get what they de

Not Your Own

1 Cor. 6:11-20 I know today is Pentecost Sunday. We’re supposed to talk about the birth of the Church with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Acts Chapter 2 and Joel Chapter 2 and Peter’s first great sermon to explain the disciples’ miraculous outpouring of the gospel message in languages from all over the world. But you’ve heard the sermons on that topic many times. Today, we’re going to talk about spiritual housekeeping so that we don’t lose touch with that great gift of the Holy Spirit who God gave then and who still operates inside us today if we are willing to cooperate. So we have this text in 1 Corinthians 6, which at first looks like we’re going to have to talk about sexual immorality today. Notice also that his is the second half of the chapter and it looks like we’re going to go backwards and cover the first half of 1 Corinthians 6 next week. That’s because the text before us is actually a pretty good text to work with on Pentecost Sunday. I hope you’ll see what I mean
