118. How It Works in the Kingdom

Key Verse: "as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is My Word that goes out from my mouth: it will not return to Me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it."
Isaiah 55:10-11

Behold a mystery: the seed that the farmer plants in the ground sprouts and grows and produces for the farmer. Behold a mystery: the seed of the Word of God, planted in the soil of a willing heart, sprouts and grows and produces for its maker. If the farmer were to wait until he fully understood the process, he may never have a crop. If we wait until we fully understand the mystery of God's Word in the heart of a man, we may never lead another to the Lord.

God's ways are not our ways and we need to accept that. It would be foolish for the farmer to lose sleep over trying to figure it all out. Instead, by faith he prepares the soil and plants his crop in the spring. He dutifully tends the crop, removing predators and what weeds he can, doing his best to maintain soil conditions. He is obedient to his task and, Lord willing, in the fall, provided that conditions remain favorable, he will have a harvest as a reward for his faithfulness and discipline.

It is amazing how similar our calling in Christ is to that of the farmer for his crop. We do not understand exactly how Christ works in our own hearts, let alone in someone else’s. We are called to be obedient, in faith, to spread His Word, and be obedient in His command to "Go into all the world and preach the gospel," (Matthew 28:19), and have faith that God's Word will not return to Him empty, but will accomplish what He desires, and achieve the purpose for which it was sent by Him. (Isaiah 55:11B) "For faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the certainty of things unseen." (Hebrews 11:1)

We can never hold back because we think that the person we might reach isn't worth it, or is too hard-hearted to win for Christ. If Christ had treated us that way, where would we be today? "For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose." (Phil. 2:13) We don't know the outcome. Our job is to be faithful, sow the seed, nourish and tend it faithfully with prayer and leave the results up to God.

This is another illustration, common to an agricultural society to help them understand the Kingdom of God, Christ's Kingdom. Yesterday, Jesus talked about the soil, our hearts, and the seed, His Word. Today, the seed is still His word, but the key ingredient today is our faithful obedience and our trust in the power of God's Word. As we put these parables together, we are beginning to understand how it works, meaning the Kingdom of God. Again, He speaks in parables to keep a bit of mystery for those who do not care to know, but He has promised, "You will find Him if you look for Him with all your heart and with all your soul." (Deut. 4:29b).  Be earnest and His mysteries will become known to you.

October 27 Save the Glaze for the Bunny

Like a coating of glaze over earthenware are fervent lips of an evil heart. A malicious man disguises himself with his lips. But in his heart, he harbors deceit. Though his speech is charming, do not believe him, for seven abominations fill his heart. His malice may be concealed by deception, but his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly. If a man digs a pit, he will fall into it. If a man rolls a stone, it will roll back on him. ~Proverbs 26:23-28 For there are many rebellious people, mere talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision group. They must be silenced, because they are ruining whole households by teaching things they ought not teach—and that for the sake of dishonest gain. Even one of their own prophets has said, “Cretans are always liars, evil brutes, lazy gluttons.” This testimony is true. Therefore, rebuke them sharply, so that they will be sound in the faith and will pay no attention to Jewish myths or to the commands of those who reject the truth. T...

July 16 Thick Skinned Love

Whoever covers over an offence promotes love, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends. ~Proverbs 17:9 If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault, just between the two of you. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over. ~Matthew 18:15  The end of all things is near. Therefore, be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray. Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. ~1 Peter 4:7-8  Being offended seems to be the battle cry of the day. Instead of freedom of speech, everyone has the right not to be offended. If one is offended, then one has the right to exact vengeance on the offender because, of course, the offender KNEW that he or she was being offensive and just didn’t care. Is that how you see much of society behaving today?  There seems to be all of this offending and finger pointing that just keeps growing and growing. Nothing is being resolved, just more blame that grows louder a...

January 24 You’ll See, He Remembers

The wise inherit honor, but fools He holds up to shame. ~Proverbs 3:35 “Tell the righteous it will be well with them, for they will enjoy the fruit of their deeds.” ~Isaiah 3:10 “God is not unjust; He will not forget your work and the love you have shown Him as you have helped His people and continue to help them. We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, in order to make your hope sure. We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.” ~Hebrews 6:10-12 “The sins of some men are obvious, reaching the place of judgment ahead of them. The sins of others trail behind them. In the same way, good deeds are obvious, and even those that are not cannot be hidden.” ~1 Timothy 5:24-25 “But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.” ~Matthew 12:36-3...
