January 25 Solomon’s Second Review

Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or swerve from them. Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; Love her, and she will watch over you. Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding. Esteem her, and she will exalt you; embrace her, and she will honor you. She will set a garland of grace on your head and present you with a crown of splendor. ~Proverbs 4:5-9

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given. ~James 1:5

Inscribed on the wall of the Library Of Congress: "Wisdom is the principal thing therefore get wisdom and with all thy getting, get understanding" ~Proverbs 4:7

It is amazing to me all of the scripture that is embedded throughout our nation’s capital. In truth, the scripture readings for today are mostly a repeat, or review of things we have already said. Keep wisdom close, as a crown or garland would be, and she will reward you and bless you for it. However, may today’s example serve as a warning to us. Yes, we can turn scripture into plaques and memes. We can use it on our letterhead and mottoes, but it becomes too easy for us to begin reducing the scripture that surrounds us in our daily lives down to simple ornamental catch phrases and decoration and forget to internalize the wisdom that these scriptures represent.

It’s easy to fault congress for not behaving with godly wisdom and ignoring the principles that are on display all around them, but are they the only ones? I am reminded of one of our devotionals last December in which we talked about how the children of Israel began not to notice the pillar of cloud and fire that was leading them. It’s hard to believe they could, but they did. How often do we do the same?

God calls us to meditate, internalize and process His Word. Admittedly, it’s hard work. Think of it like, maybe chewing a juicy steak? The writer of Hebrews challenges his readers to move beyond the milk of the Gospel to working on the harder points. (Heb. 5:11-6:2) Remember, we want to grow! We want to be healthy! We want to become wise in Him! Don’t let scripture become reduced to a decoration on your wall or a book on your table. Esteem her as your prize possession and you will be the one blessed.

Prayer: Lord, I do want to get wisdom. I’m asking You for more wisdom. I want to remember Your words and not swerve from them. I know I need the protection wisdom offers. I’m not smart enough without Your help. I admit that. Thank You God, for Your promise to who give wisdom generously to all without finding fault. Help me to walk in the light. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Mark 7:15 Approximately six hundred years before Jesus, the people of Judah had sinned so badly by ignoring the word of the Lord that God allowed them to be punished by being destroyed by the Babylonians. Jerusalem was completely ruined. Many of the citizens were killed and only a relatively few, referred to as "the remnant," were carried off to live in Babylon for 70 years before being allowed to return and begin again. This event proved to be a real wake up call for the people. The priests and Levites developed an extensive list of rules and regulations by which the people were to live that would outline very clearly how not to break the Ten Commandments again, or any of the whole Law, or "Torah," from Moses in the first five books of the

Spiritual Warfare

Scripture: Ephesians 6:10-18 Listen Link:  http://www.firstcovenantcadillac.org/#!this-weeks-sermon/c20mw There’s a war on! And it’s not overseas. I am not talking about the war on terrorism. I am talking about the war in which your heart is the battle ground. It is a war between spiritual forces of good and evil. The victory is ours in Christ. The battle belongs to the Lord. But we are called to play our part. That is why Paul instructs believers like you and me to “be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.”  The life of discipleship gives us no time to relax and live our lives ignoring the spiritual battle. We are ordered to fight. It’s not a pleasant metaphor these days. But Paul had no qualms about telling Christians to be good soldiers, prepared for battle. Even when we do take a Sabbath and rest in the Lord, it is only so that we made ready for the next battle. But this kind of battle won’t wear us out if we are strong in the lord. In fact, we will rejoice! This is not a gr
