Jan 7 The Power of Wisdom

He holds victory in store for the upright, He is a shield to those whose walk is blameless. He guards the course of the just and protects the way of His faithful ones. Then you will understand what is right and just and fair—every good path. For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul. Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you. Wisdom will save you from the ways of the wicked. ~Proverbs 2:7-12a

“I love You, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I call to the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and I am saved from my enemies.” ~Psalm 18:1-3

I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which He has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints, and His incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of His mighty strength, which He exerted in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly realms far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. ~Ephesians 1:18-21

Have you ever played chess, or at least watched the game? In the game of chess, wisdom is required to employ patience and the ability to remain unruffled when a piece is captured by the opponent. Wisdom guides the master player to have the ability to think down the road to victory no matter how the board looks in the moment. What is the loss of one piece when the Master has the game in hand.

I think of Jesus Himself when satan declared, “CHECK!” and with His resurrection, Jesus proved, “Checkmate.” When Jesus died on the cross, satan believed he had won. The rest would be simply a mop up operation. Jesus, because of who He was, creator and master, knew differently.

Jesus lived by this wisdom of God and demonstrated its benefits. He was never ruffled or drawn off course by the events of His earthly life. He just kept plodding, on course, toward the cross and the victory that lay beyond. What an amazing example of unflappable wisdom He is!

Wisdom places confidence in the unseen God when chaos is all around us. That confidence is well placed because God can be trusted, but what makes it even stronger is when we remember who we are in Him. We are His dearly loved children! Look at the good that is in store for we who believe and trust in Him and the wisdom He imparts.

We Have victory.
We have Him as our shield.
He is our guard and protector.
He promises discretion and understanding.
He saves us from the ways of the wicked.
He not only lends us His strength, He is our strength itself.
He is our fortress.
He is our refuge.
He is our deliverer.
He is our rock.
He is our power, and not just any power, but resurrection power!
One day, we will be seated with Him in the heavenlies.

Satan’s only hope is to get us off our game in the hopes that we will forget all that and believe it’s over when we are only in check. He wants us to concentrate on the seen and believe that what is temporary is reality. If we can fix our eyes on Jesus, and remember how He walked, remembering who we are in Him and what we have in Him, even though we can’t necessarily see it, the wisdom He gives us enables us to live victoriously because we can’t be drawn off our game either.

“I belong to Jesus,” is our battle cry. When we believe it and hold steady, James said we are resisting satan. (James 4:7) Satan is such a coward that he will flee. Go forth today in all that you have in Christ and stamp a victory at the end because of Him!”

Prayer:  I love You, O Lord, my strength, my rock, my shield my fortress! Thank you for life in Christ as a child of God. I am immortal in the best sense of that word. I am powerful in Christ to live a life of wisdom and obedience. I still depend on You for all of it, but it means that satan has no say in how I live. I will live for you today. In Jesus' name, amen.

211. The Sons of Thunder's Request

Matthew 20:20-28 , Mark 10:35-45 , Key verse: "Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all." Mark 10:43B-44 In our readings for yesterday, in which Jesus outlined what was about to happen to Him, for His disciples, the passage in Luke ends: "The disciples did not understand any of this. It's meaning was hidden from them, and they did not know what He was talking about." ( Luke 18:34 ) Now, we see just how truly clueless they were. Jesus had laid out a plan before them of pain and suffering and death and now James and John are focused on a promotion. The disconnect is so obvious. It's really not important to know whether James and john came up with this request on their own or if their mother put them up to it. The request was made and James and John thought that they could handle the responsibility that would come with it. What is that saying, "Fools rush in where angels fe...

These Boots are Made for Walking

Scripture: Ephesians 6:10-15 These Boots are Made for Walking. Of course, I picked that title because it has a reference to popular culture, and it connects with our text today about “feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.” I was tempted to play the video of that song, but it’s really not amenable to worship. If you remember that old song, it was quite confrontational. The singer had a righteous complaint against a boyfriend or spouse who was cheating on her. She’s not going to put up with that, and the song goes on to say, “One of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you!” And that “take a stand” bravado made her a hero! It was a #1 hit in 1966. I mention it because it has one interesting parallel and one major contrast with the message of grace and forgiveness. That parallel is this. God has a righteous complaint against the entire human race for cheating Him out of the loving relationship He desires with us. As the God who created us, he h...

186. Ten Healed, Or One?

Luke 17:11-19 Key Verse: Then He said to him, "Rise and go; your faith has made you well." Luke 17:19 At last, Jesus has left the crowd behind and again is continuing His journey toward Jerusalem. His path takes Him and His disciples along the border of Judea and Samaria, between the pure Jews, and the hated half breeds of the day. On His way, Jesus encounters an interesting group of people. We only learn the nationality of one of them and, though we don't know the nationality of the others, because Jesus sends them to the priests in Jerusalem we can probably assume that at least some of them are Jews. Isn't it interesting that through leprosy, a disease that causes much suffering, the dividing wall of hatred has come down for the sake of companionship? We encountered one leper earlier on our Journey. Lepers were the dreaded untouchables of the day. Their disease cut them off from all they loved. It was a very lonely life. No wonder these people had ...
