75. What Do You Long For?

Key Verse:

My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise You.

Psalm 63:5

What are you hungry for, really? When that question is addressed to our physical interests, we seem to have no shortage of answers. Some of us like Chinese food while others prefer Mexican. Some prefer sweets, while others, like me, prefer the salty foods such as chips and crackers. We have no problem finding food to satisfy our physical appetites and, as a result, most of us are overweight and out of shape.

How sad then that, for spiritual food, where the selection is God’s word itself, so many of us are malnourished. It’s the one food craving that He promises to fulfill, yet too many of us do not accept His offer, preferring instead the items that do not satisfy and will only have to be supplied again. If only we were as concerned about satisfying the longing of our souls as we are motivated to fill our stomachs.

Again, Jesus turns our perspective upside down by calling us to meet the need of what is truly important. O, that we could pray with the Psalmist, “O God, You are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for You, my body longs for You, in a dry and weary land where there is no water.” (Psalm 63:1) That is where we are in this world, a spiritually dry and weary land. Yet, God promises to fill us with Himself, if we will come to Him and seek His righteousness over our selfishness.

Fast from food, if you must, but use that time to Feast on Him, seek Him while He may be found. You will not be disappointed, for He has promised, “you will be satisfied.”

July 16 Thick Skinned Love

Whoever covers over an offence promotes love, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends. ~Proverbs 17:9 If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault, just between the two of you. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over. ~Matthew 18:15 The end of all things is near. Therefore, be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray. Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. ~1 Peter 4:7-8 Being offended seems to be the battle cry of the day. Instead of freedom of speech, everyone has the right not to be offended. If one is offended, then one has the right to exact vengeance on the offender because, of course, the offender KNEW that he or she was being offensive and just didn’t care. Last week I talked about what happened in the evening of Easter day. Today’s story happened in the midday or afternoon of that day. But I wanted to save it for our Communion Sunday because Jesus breaks the bread for them at the end of this story and that is what we will be doing today at the end of the message when we celebrate the Lord’s Supper together. We’re talking about two of Jesus’ disciples who left Jerusalem to walk to Emmaus, perhaps the home of one or both of them. But Jesus walked with them and once they realized Jesus was alive, these two disciples hurried back to the rest of the disciples to alert them to the wonderful news.
